Michael Rains, MD earned his undergraduate degree with honors at Baylor University.  He completed medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he graduated as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. During medical school, Dr. Rains was awarded the Thomas B. Freese Award for Overall Excellence in Dermatology and received Magna Cum Laude for his research in Dermatology.

He then completed both his Internal Medicine internship and Dermatology residency from the University of Texas Southwestern in Austin, where he served as chief resident in his last year. He has been involved in various research, presentations in scholarly meetings, and scientific publications both in the regional and national level.

Following his training, Dr. Rains remained in Austin, Texas where he split his time in private practice and as adjunct faculty at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas, Austin.  There he taught medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology to medical students and dermatology residents in an academic center.

Dr. Rains and his family relocated to Asheville, NC in 2018 and is excited to provide dermatologic care at Advanced Dermatology and Skin Surgery.  His clinical interests include medical, procedural and cosmetic dermatology.  Additionally, he has a special interest in treatment of skin conditions with narrowband ultraviolet light phototherapy.  Dr. Rains and his wife, who is a psychotherapist, have one daughter and one son.  He enjoys running, hiking, cooking and spending time with his family and two dogs.
