Perioral Dermatitis
Do you suffer from red acne-like bumps around your mouth and nose?
If so, this can be a frustrating issue to handle.
Perioral dermatitis consists of discrete, red bumps and even pustules that are distributed around the mouth and nose. However, it spares the margin of the lip.
It typically occurs in women between the ages of 20 and 35years old, although that is not an all-inclusive age group.
Some may think it is acne and become frustrated as the acne treatments they use do not resolve the irritation. It can cause embarrassment and even force the patient to avoid social situations as they fear they are being stared at.
Rest assured that it can be managed with the proper evaluation.
It is important that steroids are not used and that possible causative factors are discontinued to include cinnamon gum, sunscreens in lipsticks and lip balms, and certain kinds of toothpaste. It may be necessary that a patient is given a prescription as well.
